Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Pharmaceutical Chemistry is the branch of chemistry that deals with the design, synthesis, and development of pharmaceutical agents, focusing on the chemical properties and processes involved in creating drugs. It combines aspects of organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and biochemistry to understand how chemicals can interact with the body and lead to therapeutic effects. It also involves the study of the mechanisms by which drugs exert their action and their potential side effects.

Objective

The major objective of the pharmaceutical chemistry department is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand the chemical principles underlying drug design, synthesis and analysis and also to ensure the safe and effective use of pharmaceuticals in clinical practice.

The department facilitate its students with a strong foundation in inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and bio chemistry, which is essential for understanding of the chemical properties of the drugs and their interaction with biological systems. The students also learn the methods used for analysis and characterization of drugs including chromatography and spectroscopic techniques.

Strength of Department

● Centralized instrumentation facility with advanced analytical instruments.
● Focus on the developments in the areas of analytical methods, bio analysis and herbal product.
● Use of innovative teaching methods and ICT tools in teaching.
